Problems getting started

I am totally new to this, so forgive me if I have overlooked the appropriate documentation. I have installed controller 2.0.0 with internal date 10-3-2012 on my Win XP SP3 PC.
I did set the environment variable HOME_JAVA to the default path where I had Java installed. Controller did not start properly and mentioned something about JRE and JDK. I than realised I had JRE installed. Setting environment HOME_JRE made controller start.

Question 1: Should I use JDK or JRE?

Unfortunately there is an error in the startup of controller:

Controller definition was not found in this OpenRemote Controller instance.
If you are starting the controller for the first time, please use your web
browser to connect to the controller home page and synchronize it with your
online account.

This operation failed, because the synchronise form in the WEB interface said that my Designer credentials were wrong. But if I login to Designer itself the same credentials are accepted. I repeated this several times.
The message was:
ERROR 2012-03-19 14:08:22,031 : Synchronizing controller with online account failed : Authentication failed, please check your username and password.

Question 2: What can I do about this?

In the main download screen I see "OpenRemote supports control panel rendering on Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android phones and Android tablets and on desktop web browsers". In Designer I only have the option to choose Ipad, Iphone, or Android for a new panel.

Question 3: How do I make a WEB panel?

PS: For a starter like me it would handy if there were a tiny sample application that I could load and inspect in my designer environment. The learning curve for this product is rather steep I am afraid

Thank you

    1) JRE is good enough. The startup error is fine it just says that you did not upload/sync any configuration from your online account.

2)Make sure you have an online account with the designer (not the forums): http://composer.openremote.org/demo/
If the sync does not work maybe you can find some more information in the controller log file. Also you can download your design from the designer as a zip file and import that into the controller.

    3) You can use custom panel or any other panel for the web console also.

We already put quite some How-to's and videos on the documentation section of the website. Maybe something there will help.

And yes, the learning curve is still pretty steep but hopefully this will change one day
Volunteers for tutorials and documentation are welcome

      Ad 2)
      a) I did have a valid and working account. In the meantime I have seen a much older post with the same problem, where Juha Lindfors answered that this login error can be ignored. I don't remember for which version that remark was.

      b) I did have a design with only one device with only one command. I tried to export that for test purposes to a ZIP. The system said "nothing to export". Apparantly this was an incomplete model. Can I find somewhere what is required as a minimum in a model.

I have gone through many of the tutorials, and yes I can follow the steps. But building something from scratch is a different story. I will try something minimalistic.

I really appreciate what you guys are doing. I do like the overall architecture of OpenRemote. There is indeed a lot of tutorial and background material available. I almost got drowned in it. Thanks for helping to swim.
Hopefully I reach a point where I can help to document.

The Wake on Lan example http://www.openremote.org/display/docs/OpenRemote+2.0+How+To+-+Wake-on-LAN+(WOL) was a good starter for me. Next is playing with rules

The 'authentication failed' seems to happen if you haven't created a model in the designer. As it's your first time using the designer this seems a likely red herring message.
